Careers education is key to the success of the young people at Slated Row, we are committed to ensuring that students are well-prepared for their next steps when they leave school, be it for education or employment. We have grown our careers programme and opportunities with local and national companies to ensure we give our young people the best life chances we can. We work with organisations to give our students ‘real life’ world of work experiences. We are proud to work with BSH, John Lewis, MK Food Bank, Greenleys Community centre, Willen Hospice and the ‘Creative Courtyards Project’ linked with MK Hospital. We will also arrange for individual work placements and visits to ensure we personalise our experiences for the students wherever possible. All our placements are supported by our Job Coach and a TA to ensure that students are mentored whilst on placement.
As part of Key Stage 4 & P16 curriculum, there is a great focus on skills for work and life. Through careers-related activities and through our curriculum, we aim to inform students about the range of opportunities available and we aim to provide personalised guidance to support their decision-making. Through our PHSE programme we raise students’ awareness of and develop the employability skills that will equip them for success in their chosen careers. It is important that we support the transition to adulthood by ensuring we visit possible destinations once they leave SRS and so visit Moulton College and Mk College where our Yr14’s can experience delivered weekly sessions by College staff. The Gatsby benchmarks are embedded in our provision.
Our careers provision is well- developed and embedded in the curriculum providing our students with good quality information about their opportunities and next steps beyond Slated Row. Careers at Slated Row are personalised to meet the needs of different age-groups, and opportunities and impartial advice is tailored for individual students, offering guidance interviews at Year 11 and Y14. Our job coach also meets students regularly to update their Vocational profiles which feeds into the students EHCP targets.

Young people with SEND are less likely to take exams that employers recognise, such as GCSEs. They also have higher rates of unemployment than other students. Many young people with SEND would benefit from additional career support such as supported internships, apprenticeships and employment, extended workplace interviews, and supported enterprise activities and volunteering. With the right support and encouragement, many of these students can access the broad range of career outcomes available to their peers including apprenticeships, employer training schemes, university or employment.

Personal guidance
Careers is clearly taught across the curriculum, to all students at Slated Row School.
From Reception through to Key Stage 4, Careers is taught distinctly in PSHE, in the strands of Them: Economic Wellbeing - Money and Them: Economic Wellbeing - Aspirations, Work and Careers. This will be covered by students in all pathways, every year. In addition, Key Stage 3 Scaffolded classes and all Key Stage 4 classes have a distinct Careers lesson timetabled, at least once a week. This is supported through students accessing the Skills Builder programme, aimed at developing the skills and understanding needed for the workplace. At Post 16, students follow a distinct Careers timetable, with ASDAN units completed to prepare them for life after Slated Row School and the wider world of work.
"Careers education is a strength. Work experience opportunities are varied and well
matched to pupils’ interests. Pupils learn about different types of jobs and the
qualifications needed. Sixth-form students spend some of their time at the school’s Hub.
This provides many opportunities for pupils to develop their enterprise skills." Ofsted 2023
